Hello George! I am currently doing research for a movie that I'm writing on a basketball referee and I was wondering if I could come for a day of your camp to ask a few questions and observe. It would be a great help for me to have some insight on the dynamics and doctrine that go into learning the craft of officiating. Hope to hear from you soon as camp in coming up quick. Thank You Adrian

I think this is great, it gives us official a more local "officiating.com" to work with. I would hope officials in the surrounding area would contribute valuable stories from local h.s. and college bball games as learning tools. Thanks, Mark Colopy

I have had the previllege of hearing you speak on several occaissions. I have found you to be a wealth of information and I want to absorb as much as I can from you. I am seriously thinking of attending your camp. I'm currently officiating at the college level NJCAA with the Mid-Atlantic Basketball Association in Maryland and High School Varsity in Connecticut. I live in Connecticut and I'm a United States Navy man on approaching 20 years of service. I've been officiating a total of 16 years and I love it. Due to the current situations overseas, I must wait right now on when to attend your camp. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to elevate my skills and continues learning experience of the game. Look forward to attending your camp soon. Very Respecfully, David Cruz

This is a great site...I really enjoy reading the newsletters in particular. They are very educational/informative. Question(s): What are the main things that the NBA/NCAA looks for when scouting for official's? If someone is in there late 30's or early 40's do they have a realistic chance of becoming an official at these levels?

Great Website. My name is Jeff Hurst and I have been a VHSL Official for ten years. My career began as a freshman at JMU. You conducted the first clinic and helped motivate me to become a great official. You might not remember, but as a junior a student pushed me after a call I made during an intramural contest. You called a clinic the next week and talked about the officiating "fraternity" and the support that follows this philosophy. I have called in three VHSL State Basketball Tournaments including a Group A State Semi-Final in Lynchburg, VA. I am currently a member of the Appalachian Officials Association and need some ideas for recruitment of some new officials. The demand will be overwhelming next year when girl's BBall moves to the winter. Thanks, Jeff Hurst

We have our youth basketball coaches meeting on November 4th and I am looking for some "coach vs official" stories to hand out and go over. In our league, we use mostly HS age boys/girls as our officials. This is by necessity - the adult won't do it. The officials are expected to call a perfect game. The kids - players make dozens of mistakes during the game, coaches make poor coaching decisions during the game but the officials are jumped on the first time they make a call that someone doesn't like, understand or feels they are being screwed. I know that it would be fiction but I am looking for a story or stories about officials that walked up to a coach or a player and gave them some of the crap that they have been given. I know that stories like this are probably non-existent or few-and-far-between but if you know of any, please let me know. Thanks, Steve Geddes, CYSA Director of Recreation

George: I'm contemplating a second career that will encompass something about which I'm passionate. Having grown up in ACC land, I love college basketball and have often thought the challenge of college basketball officating would be thrilling. I played basketball in high school. I have no idea how to even begin looking into this, but would like your thoughts on the following: Assuming I have the natural ability and work at it very hard, what is the typical career path a basketball official takes? How do I get the training and experience necessary to test and hone my skills? Where do I begin? Is it a totally unrealistic goal of becoming a Division I college basketball official? Thanks for your time and response. Charles

In response to the coach whose player was called for the technical, (The one where his player had her back to the play and her arms up), what the official was calling was a rule that a defensive player is not allowed to put his or her hands in the offensive players face in order to stop them from seeing an incoming pass.

The situation: CYO girls basketball, on an inbounds play under the opponents basket, player 1 is inbounding the ball. Is it legal for player 2 to run out of bounds over the baseline, and then have player 1 pass the ball to (the now out of bounds) player 2, who then inbounds the ball? Thanks for your answer!

Is there a such thing as a "power dribble", often used by centers (Shaq), involving one dribble (down low) with both hands, and then going directly to the basket? I've seen it used repeatedly by Shaq, and I thought this particular move would be considered a "double dribble", or is it?

George, After closing ceremonies on Sunday June 23,2002 at your camp I realized that you are someone that is "good for the game." Officials rarely receive the credit that they sometimes deserve, and Being in that room and watching some of the recipients who were blessed to receive awards get in touch with there feelings, was overwhelming.I just wanted you to know that the watch that I received for being a fourth year official at your school, is the best peice of jewelry that I own today. I have two other officials from the New York City area who have expressed interest in attending your camp, and have told me they are also excited about attending your school in June. I have a website where I share information with officials about camps and clinics throughout the country. The two officials who will be attending your school this summer are members of the group and told me that they first heard about your group through the website. So, the website is helping to spread the message about your school. If you would like to visit Basketball Officials United we are located at: http://groups.aol.com/bsktblloffcl

George, Can you please answer this question for me. I appreciate you taking time. If Person_A is shooting a ball (jump shot/set shot etc.): Is it a foul if the defender touches person_A's hand AFTER the ball is released? If so, what part of the hand? So let's say, the defender jumps to block person_A's shot, person_A releases the ball and the defender touches person_A's fingers after his shot. Is this a foul? Also, if the defender falls on person_A after the ball has been released is that a foul? How do you call fouls in situations like this. Once again thanks for your answers.

I would love to attend your camp if I get the money. Are there also any camps that are conducted for the expressed purpose of training future NBA officials (similar to the pro baseball camps in Florida)? Also, an NBA rules question: Was the defensive 3-second rule instituted as a "companion" to the zone defense?

This isn't really a question, but a further explanation to the question about obstruction. The NFHS rules DO have a rule against obstructing an opponent's view. It is called against a defender who is NOT guarding the ballhandler if the intent is ONLY to obstruct the offensive player's view. The rule book reference is: Rule 10, Section 3, Article 8d. "A player shall not commit an unsporting foul," including "obstructing the vision of an opponent not in control of the ball by waving hands near his/her eyes." The case book explains: "It is unsporting for a guard to take a position behind a post player, or to take a position facing an opponent, or to take a position with his/her back to the ball and facing the opponent and then in either case, wave or hold the hands in front of the opponent's eyes so that the opponent cannot see to receive a pass.... Holding or waving hands near the eye for the ostensible PURPOSE of obstructing an opponent's vision is unsporting" (emphasis mine).

George, I have already registered for camp. A friend is getting married Friday, June 21. He has asked me to be apart of the wedding. I do not want to take up a valuable space in camp and have to leave Friday morning and not arrive back at camp until midday Saturday. Thus causing someone else to have to cover for me or not allow someone else the opportunity to be able to participate fully. I would like to request a refund for this summer and be put on the list to participate in next summer's camp. Sincerely, WILLIAM D. DAVIS

I have been to numerous camps throughout the East Coast and George Toliver's camp is by far the best camp. His camp advanced my farther in my officiating career than any other camp I have ever attended...Thanks George

George, I attended the Mid-South camp at UNC in 2001. During the heat of the battle we sometimes forget to thank the people bring value to our day to day needs and lives. Therefore, I just wanted to tell you I appreciate your views and opinions during the UNC camp. Again, Thank You Chris Minor (Ohio)
